Farmers' strategies for achieving food security under high and low population density farming systems in northern Ghana are compared. The context is the farming systems approach to agricultural research adopted recently in Ghana. Limitations of, and opportunities presented by, existing strategies for policy intervention are identified, emphasizing differences in strategies presented by relative land availability. The farming systems research approach is used as a basic methodology to describe and classify the prevailing systems in Northern Ghana, to describe resource endowment, allocation of resources and their efficiency and rentability. Sixty farm households from two villages were involved in the study.
