Motor nerve conduction velocity of male Saudi Arabians

Motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) in healthy limbs from 120 male Arabians was examined. These subjects were divided into 3 groups: 10-35, 36-50 and 51-80 years old. The data of various parameters with respect to MNCV were obtained from the median, ulnar, peroneal and tibial nerves. The MNCVs (mean .+-. standard deviation) of the overall age groups in the upper limbs from elbow to wrist were 56.2 .+-. 5.9 m/sec for the median nerve, and 57.5 .+-. 6.0 m/sec for the ulnar nerve. The lowest value of these 2 nerves was 39.8 m/sec. The values in the lower limbs from knee to ankle were 48.5 .+-. 6.1 m/sec for the peroneal nerve and 49.2 .+-. 5.9 m/sec for the tibial nerve. The lowest value of the 2 nerves was 34.6 m/sec. There was an apparent slowing of MNCV in the older age groups in each peripheral nerve. The values obtained in this study were compared with those reported in Taiwan and North America and minor differences were observed. The necessity and importance of establishing normal values in each laboratory were stressed.
