A motor nerve conduction velocity across the upper trunk and lateral cord of the brachial plexus was obtained after stimulation of C6 spinal nerve root and stimulation of the radial nerve at the lower border of the axilla. The evoked potential was recorded in the brachioradialis at the elbow. The mean nerve conduction velocity was 68 .+-. 5 m/s for 25 normal subjects and 40 .+-. 7 m/s for 5 subjects with neuropathies of the upper trunk of the brachial plexus. The technique is both accurate and completely safe and provides a direct latency across those portions of the brachial plexus that produce Erb's palsy.
