A case of tracheal metastasis of pulmonary cancer

The report presents a case of tracheal metastasis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma. The patient, a forty year old male, had undergone left lower lobectomy for his stage 1 (T1N0M0) adenocarcinoma one year and six months before the second administration for the treatment of newly developed tracheal tumor. The hemisphere shaped tumor protruded from left anterior wall in upper third of trachea obstructing more than half of the lumen. Atypical cells were proved in the biopsy specimen of the tumor. Sleeve resection of five rings long and primary anastomosis of trachea was done by low collar incision. The tumor was covered with tracheal mucosa at its neck and infiltrated into just inner side of tracheal cartilage. Histologically the tumor was moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma composed of papillary growth and pavement arrangement of tumor cells with alcian blue stained mucus scattered in the nest, of which appearance indicated a close resemblance to that of pulmonary adenocarcinoma resected one year and six-months before. We concluded the tracheal tumor was metastasis of pulmonary cancer for its possible submucosal origin and a close histological resemblance of the two.
