Surgical treatment of pulmonary metastasis of colorectal cancer

Clinical evaluation and anlaysis of 16 cases of pulmonary metastatic lesions of colorectal origin surgically treated by pulmonary resection in Nagoya, Japan were discussed. There is no effective chemo- and radiotherapy for pulmonary metastasis of colonic and rectal cancer at the present time. Surgery can be used to treat this condition provided that the general condition of the patient is compatible with surgery, the primary focus of the disease is completely under control, the pulmonary lesion is solitary without evidence of concomitant metastases elsewhere and the time interval between the operation for the primary lesion and the appearance of pulmonary metastasis is relatively long.
