The effect produced by verapamil on hemodynamics was studied in 30 patients with hypertensive crises and in 15 patients with acute myocardial infarction. Intravenous drip administration of verapamil in hypertensive crises with the initially reduced cardiac index and increased peripheral resistance caused a considerable decrease in arterial pressure, peripheral resistance, certain increase in cardiac index, and the rate of cardiac contractions. Diuresis was enhanced. Verapamil caused marked vasodilatory effect, decrease in arterial pressure and peripheral resistance, and increase in the blood flow in skeletal muscles and negative inotropic effect in the acute period of myocardial infarction and arterial hypertension. Verapamil used in the absence of arterial hypertension and with normal vascular tone had no effect on hemodynamic parameters.
