Two thiol antidotes of mercury poisoning Viz. 2,3-dimercaptopropanol (BAL) and D-penicillamine (DPA) were investigated for their influence on the disposition of Hg2+ from rat renal cytosol. Though, both BAL and DPA mobilized Hg2+ mainly from Hg-thionein fraction, BAL appeared to be a more effective chelator in not only mobilizing Hg2+ from the low molecular weight Hg-thionein but also from the high molecular weight metalloproteins. The mode of action of BAL and DPA was characteristic of thiol chelators that is elimination of Hg2+ from the renal cytosol and not through inducing renal metallothioneine (MT)-reported to be capable of forming inactive complex with Hg2+.
