Transrectal needle biopsy of the prostate was performed in 120 patients in whom prostatic carcinoma was suspected. The modified Franklin-Silvermann needle was used. In 47.5% of the cases the histological examination revealed adenocarcinoma; in 28.3% benign prostatic hypertrophy; in 10.8% chronic prostatitis; in 9.2% normal prostate and 4.2% it was inconclusive. Five patients required a second biopsy for diagnostic confirmation. Needle biopsy of the prostate is a method of value for the diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma.
