In early March, 1997, US-imported, home-use HIV test kits (INSTI HIV1,2, Bartels State, USA) were promoted in a semi-advertisement television programme by a medical academic who carried out the test on a popular news presenter, live on the evening news when millions of Turkish citizens were watching. The advertisement announced that the kits and processing materials would be available in pharmacies. The test costs about US$20 in Turkey, and takes only 1 min to process after one drop of blood has been collected. The availability of HIV test kits is limited in the USA because of the possibility of increasing false confidence in the sexual partners of tested individuals. But the most important issue is one of medical ethics. Medical professions should focus on community health and preventive education; they should not take part in television programmes that mimic commercial advertisements.
