Importance of studying the sputum of pneumonia and bronchitis patients

Patients (129) were followed to study indices of local anti-infection protection for the bronchi, the nature of the microbial flora and the etiology of the pathogenic process. Data were presented on phagocytic cells and their associations contained in sputum of patients with chronic bronchitis, chronic and acute pneumonia. Sputum study can yield valuable information of the state of local antimicrobial protection in patients with infectious diseases of the lungs. Two forms of intrabronchial infection may be identified: a deposited form confined to the bronchi, and a generalized form.
