Among 17 000 sputa analysed, 570 with pigmented growth were further studied for evidence of N. Occasionally, pigmented growth has been attributed to saprophytic fungi or bacilli with no regard to a possible N. causal agent. N. asteroides was isolated from 14 (2.6%).
