The skin irritation induced by contact with Urtica dioica can be relieved by rubbing leaves of R. napelensis on the affected part. In laboratory studies, both aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the leaves antagonized the actions of histamine and cholinergic substances (believed to be the mediators of the allergic reaction). In addition, the aqueous extract depressed myocardial contractions, heart rate and coronary outflow of isolated rabbit hearts.
