Relationship between cytomegalovirus infection in pregnant women and their neonates

Screening of 465 pregnant women and 264 neonates for infections caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) was studied from April 1987 to March 1988. The results were as follows: (1) The positively rates of CMV isolation in pregnant women, neonates were 2.37%, 1.14% respectively. (2) CMV-IgM positively rates in sera were 2.68%, 2.65% respectively. (3) The positivity rates of virus isolation or CMV-IgM investigation were 3.58%, 3.01% respectively. (4) Paired study of mothers and their neonates showed that infection in uterus was 6/9. (5) Of 6 congential CMV infected neonates followed up for 1 year, 5 are among normal range in growth and development, while another one suffers from severe congenital heart disease.
