A method was developed for the determination of salsolinol (a dopamine-acetaldehyde condensation product) in the urine using gas chromatography electron impact mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring (GC/EI/SIM). Six deuterium labeled salsolinol was synthesized and used as an internal standard. The calibration curves gave a good linearity over the range of 0.5-40 pmol/tube and 5-200 pmol/tube. This analytical technique is a very useful method for identification and quantification of salsolinol in biological materials. Certain foods and fermented alcoholic beverages contained salsolinol and dopamine with a variety range of concentration. Banana changed urinary excretion of salsolinol to an abnormally high level during 2-3 days after intake. Ingestion of these foods and beverages should be taken into account on urinary salsolinol analysis.
