Analysis of the postmortem material collected over 10 years (1970-1979) has shown that cardiac aneurysms accounted for 9.8 per cent of cases and for 31.7 per cent among those who died of coronary heart disease. This is evidence of high incidence of this complication. The anterior wall was affected in 67 per cent and the posterior wall in 33 per cent of cases. The life-time diagnosis of cardiac aneurysms is difficult: under polyclinical conditions they were revealed in 18.7 per cent and under hospital conditions in 50.2 per cent of cases. In the majority of those who died the death was caused by sudden coronary failure, 92 patients had infarction, 10 rupture of the aneurysms and 5 dissecting aneurysm. Patients with grave transmural infarct, microfocal post-infarction scars, macrofocal cardiosclerosis and essential hypertension should be included in the group of risk of development of cardiac aneurysm. Study of the symptoms and clinical picture of cardiac aneurysm by using current diagnostic methods may considerable improve life-time diagnosis and will help to perform operative treatment of this condition in some cases.
