Ultrasonographic study of malignancies of extra-hepatic bile ducts

The use of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of malignancies of the common bile duct is reported. The results refer to 44 patients with obstructive jaundice (26 carcinomas of the head of the pancreas, 10 cholangio-carcinomas, 4 ampullary carcinomas, 4 carcinomas of the gallbladder). The common bile duct and its dilation, which is fundamental for the diagnosis of the obstruction site, was analysed in detail. The diagnosis of malignancy is possible only when a sonographically visible mass is present. Percutaneous cholangiography is an important diagnostic procedure when sonographic diagnosis remains uncertain.
