A 4-week-old infant who had been treated with nose drops for two days because of coryza was admitted because of weak cry, poor feeding and respiratory depression. He was treated with assisted ventilation for 10 hours, following which he recovered, and was discharged two days later with no neurologic sequelae. The implicated toxic component of the nose drops used was xylomethazoline, an amine derivative of imidazole with .alpha.-adrenergic activity. This case demonstrates that care should be exercised when prescribing symptomatic drug treatment in infancy.
