A literature review summarizes and discusses data for the occurrence and significance of dietary-induced thermogenesis (DIT) in test animals and the influence of various factors on the magnitude of the thermogenesis (age; diet composition; early environmental factors; genetic factors). Particular attention is given to biochemical, physiological, and pharmacological results indicating the sympathetic activation of brown fat tissue to be the main cause of DIT. Neurohumoral effects of various factors (adrenal and thyroid steroids, dopamine, histamine, insulin) on brown fat tissue activity and thermogenesis also are reviewed. The feasibility and limitations of the extension of the findings of these animal studies to the human case are considered.(wz)
