A study of the development of village economics in Zhangjiagang and Changshu, Jiangsu Province show a need for increased investment in agriculture and the development of sideline products to increase farmers' incomes. Improved management of collectives is necessary to strengthen village development. Strong development at the village level is dependent on a broader spectrum of production and new types of enterprise.
