The correlation between diabetic retinopathy and serum lipoperoxide

The correlation between the progression of the diabetic retinopathy and serum lipoperoxide (LPO) was examined in 75 patients who had diabetic retinopathy, checking the LPO average 2.1 times per 3 mo. Only 5 cases had a high LPO volume for a long time and an increase of their hemorrhages was seen. New retinal hemorrhage in 69.2% of the cases where increased LPO occurred were seen. There was no relation between the stage of retinopathy and the LPO volume. But LPO volume increased in 60% of the active retinopathy cases, but only increased in 17% of non-progressive retinopathy cases. There was no relation between the LPO volume and the onset of cataracts. The results indicated that the LPO volume had no direct affect on retinal vessels but the mechanism that increases the LPO volume accelates the progression of retinopathy.
