This paper describes the results of an investigation on the potential of rural, urban and periurban agriculture in the Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The BCM extends to approximately 80 km inland from East London. It is hoped that this information will lead to a better understanding of the potential of rural, urban and periurban agriculture for the outskirts of East London, as well as for other cities in Southern Africa. The paper also suggests areas of future research for the realization of rural, urban and periurban agriculture in similar settings.
