A pilot study was conducted to determine the prevalence of endocervical gonorrhoea in 250 pregnant and 250 nonpregnant women in the city of Kermanshah, Iran, in 2004. All women were clinically examined and answered a questionnaire on demographic characteristics, medical history, reproductive history and history of drug addiction. Results revealed that the prevalence of endocervical gonorrhoea in both pregnant and nonpregnant women was 0.4% (1 of 250). The infected women had low educational and socioeconomic status and were married. Both were nonusers of condom and had a history of pelvic and vaginal complications. It is concluded that the prevalence of endocervical gonorrhoea is similar between pregnant and nonpregnant women. Condom use could prevent gonorrhoea infection.
