Occurrence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in Tanzanian blood donors

Two hundred and eight blood donors were examined for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies with indirect haemagglutination test at the Muhimbili Centre, Dar es Salaam and positive rate of 38.0% was recorded. The antibody with blood groups, A,B,O and AB were 29.8, 33.3 43.2 and 50.0% respectively. The differences of antibody rates amongst various blood groups were not statistically significant showing that there was no association between Toxoplasma infection and ABO blood group system. The factors responsible for high antibody rates and the risk of development of blood transfusion toxoplasmosis are discussed.
