Short-term combined esophageal and gastric pH monitoring was performed in a group of patients with "typical" symptoms suggestive of gastroesophageal reflux. Patients with similar symptoms undergoing long-term pH monitoring made up the control group. The correlations symptoms/pH test and pH test/esophagitis were considered. The present investigation demonstrated that short-term combined esophageal and gastric pH monitoring provided data comparable to those of long-term pH monitoring when applied to patients with typical symptoms suggestive of gastroesophageal reflux.
