Pattern of sexually transmitted diseases at Davangere

A study was carried out to investigate the pattern of sexually transmitted diseases at Chigateri General Hospital, Davangere in Karnataka, India, based on retrospective data from January 1993 to December 2002. Among 3767 cases studied, majority were in the 21-40 years age group (69.49%). Males constituted 75.50% and females, 24.50% of cases. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were common in patients belonging to the middle income group (55%) and were more prevalent in urban areas (72.10%). Among STDs, candidosis (19.85%) was observed to be the most common STD both in males (balanoposthitis) and females (vulvovaginitis) followed by syphilis (15.95%). Other diseases observed were herpes genitalis (13.04%), chancroid (10.45%), gonorrhoea (10.14%), non-gonococcal urethritis (8.14%), condyloma acuminata (5.92%), donovanosis (5.82%), lymphogranuloma venereum (5.76%), scabies (2.85%) and molluscum contagiosum (2.07%).
