The medical and social factors associated with the increasing incidence of sexually transmitted disease in adolescents are briefly discussed and the causes of disease are described. The commonest cause of vaginal discharge is infection with either Trichomonas vaginalis or Candida albicans. Up to 40% of women suffering from gonorrhoea also have symptomatic T. vaginalis infection; if they are treated symptomatically for the trichomoniasis, the associated gonorrhoea may be missed.
