Gamma 3 heavy chain disease and monoclonal IgMk in a patient with a gastrointestinal lymphoma

A new case of gamma Heavy Chain Disease is reported in a patient with a diffuse poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma of the stomach with extension to lymph nodes and bone marrow. Following removal of the primary tumor and chemotherapy the patient survived for over five years. The heavy chain protein was isolated and corresponded to a covalent dimer of 70,000 d belonging to the IgG3 subclass. A monoclonal IgMk was also present in the patient's serum. The unusual frequency of the IgG3 subclass and of biclonal gammopathies in gamma Heavy Chain Disease is discussed.
