The metabolism of l-ephedrine in ponies

Ephedrine was administered to ponies and the subsequently voided urine examined for 1-ephedrine and for norephedrine, 4-hydroxyephedrine, and mandelic acid as possible metabolites of 1-ephedrine. Of these only norephedrine was detected, which accounted for 1% and 15% of the dose excreted in 24 hours, when the urine was alkaline or acid respectively. Examination for possible conjugates of the metabolites showed that conjugated hydroxyephe-drines were present to the extent of 3% of the dose. Traces of ephedrine were detected in the blood, 5 min. after administration, and not in the saliva. Norephedrine was not detected in either blood or saliva.
