Congenital anomalies in fetuses and newborn infants

In a period of 10 years (1974-1983) 193 cases (1.30%) of congenital anomalies were found in 14659 newborns born in a teaching hospital. Osteoarticular system anomalies were most frequent (21%) followed by cardiovascular anomalies (20%) and central nervous system anomalies (14%). In 43 cases (22.6%) congenital anomalies were the cause of perinatal death of fetuses and newborns. In the analysis of the causative factors many causes were discussed but it seems that an important role in the aetiology of fetal congenital anomalies is played by old age of the mother, viral infections pregnancy and iminent abortion.
