Natural killer (NK) cell activity in hemopoietic dysplasia

NK cell activity was studied in 15 cases of hemopoietic dysplasia. The mean .+-. S.D. of the patients' activity was found to be significantly lower than that of the control subjects (P < 0.001). The mean .+-. S.D. of the activity of patients with ringed-form sideroblasts in the bone marrow (P < 0.05) and of those with myeloblastoid cells in the peripheral smear (P < 0.01) was particularly lower than that of the others. Five patients developed acute leukemia during 1-18 mo. of clinical observation. No significant difference in NK cell activity was found between the patients who developed leukemia and the others.
