The effect of the aqueous-alcoholic extract of the bark of Guatteria gaumeri on the cholesterol of the serum hipoproteins (LP) was investigated. Thirty-three rabbits were studied, they were divided in three groups: one served as control, and the other two received the drug at the dose of 25 and 50 ul/kg/dl. Decrease of different magnitude were observed in the cholesterol level of all the studied fractions. A decrease of 23 and 37 per cent was found in total cholesterol with the two different doses used (p < 0.05 and < 0.01); a fall of 27 and 39 per cent was seen in LDLC (p < 0.05 and < 0.01) and a decrease of 11 and 29 per cent was observed in HDLC/p > 0.1 and < 0.01. The TC/HDLC ratio was 3.8 in the control group and decreased from 3.8 to 3.3 and 3.7 respectively in the treated animals.
