Ninety six subjects referred for assessment of thyroid function were studied in relation to their thyroid function and fasting serum lipids, especially high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). In 42 hyperthyroid patients, total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and HDL-C levels were significantly decreased as compared with those of normal subjects. Then 8 patients were restudied after restoration to euthyroid state; HDL-C levels were increased from 32.3 .+-. 6.2 mg/dl (Mean .+-. SD) to 58.8 .+-. 6.0 mg/dl (P < 0.05). In 15 hypothyroid patients, HDL-C levels also tended to decrease in contrast to increased TC and LDL-C levels, but when 6 patients were restudied in the euthyroid state after replacement therapy, the HDL-C level remained unchanged irrespective of decreased TC and LDL-C levels.
