Hemolytic activity of Yersinia was tested on solid and liquid media with bovine and horse erythrocytes added. Of the 216 Yersinia strains tested, 3 (1.4%) produced direct hemolysins and 1 (0.5%) produced indirect hemolysins on solid TSA (trypticase soy agar) medium with 5% bovine blood at 22.degree. C; these strains were Y. enterocolitica (1.7%). Hemolytic activity in liquid TSB (trypticase soy broth) culture supernatants with bovine erythrocytes and 0.01% lecithin was found in only 1 strain (0.6%) of this species. On TSA medium with bovine blood and 1% lecithin at 22% C, indirect hemolysins were produced by 29 (16.3%) strains of Y. entercolitica and 3 (7.9%) strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis. For 21 and 3 strains of these species, respectively, hemolytic activity was confirmed in TBS culture supernatants with bovine blood. Direct hemolysin activity against horse erythrocytes was found in 7 (3.9%) and indirect hemolysins in 5 (2.8%) strains of Y. enterocolitica in TSA medium at 22.degree. C. Some of these strains showed the activity in liquid culture supernatants at 22.degree. C. It was striking that Yersinia strains at 37.degree. C were capable of producing direct and/or indirect hemolysins against horse erythrocytes in solid and liquid media. Direct hemolysins were produced by 60 (33.7%) strains of Y. enterocolitica and 4 (0.5%) strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis. Indirect hemolysins were found in 77 (43.3%) and 13 (34.2%) strains, respectiely.
