Capacity of strains of the genus Yersinia to produce enterotoxins evaluated by a test using suckling mice

Enterotoxic activity was determined by test in suckling mice for 216 Yersinia strains in 48-h liquid trypticase soy broth culture supernatants. Of the 178 strains of y. enterocolitica, 23 (12.9%) showed reactions due to enterotoxin. Of the 38 strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis, 7 (18.4%) showed this property. Capability of enterotoxin production was found in many strains of serotypes 3 and 9 of Y. enterocolitica, and serotype 1 of Y. pseudotuberculosis, most frequently isolated from symptomatic human infection. Thermostability of the enterotoxin was experimentally confirmed, and it was shown that the enterotoxin is produced in cultures at 22.degree. but not at 37.degree. or 4.degree. C.
