Babesiosis in Wisconsin. A new focus of disease transmission

The first case of confirmed human Babesia microti infection in Wisconsin was identified in August 1983, and asymptomatic infection was confirmed by serological testing of the patient's wife. Mice (Peromyscus spp.) trapped on the patient's property and elsewhere in Wisconsin were infested with B. microti and are hosts of the tick vector Ixodes dammini. The area of Wisconsin is identified as a new enzootic focus.
