The tick vectors, geographical distribution, clinical symptoms and epidemiology of Lyme disease (caused by Borrelia burgdorferi), Rocky Mountain spotted fever (caused by Rickettsia rickettsii) and human babesiosis (caused chiefly by Babesia microti in North America) are reviewed for the USA. Information is given on various aspects including alternative modes of transmission (e.g. by blood transfusion) and summarized advice is given for the diagnosis, treatment and control of these tickborne diseases of man.
