These four articles start from the observation that although the peasant population forms the heart of Africa, they are forgotten, exploited and dominated. They examine how, in the international background of each state and in the context of national government policies and social forces, the peasantry can mobilize to modernize their society and live better, gaining real and recognized political power. They can achieve some degree of modernization on their own, but because they have to be involved in the market economy they have to depend on foreign economic and political forces.
