Runting in broilers associated with temporary maldigestion

Faeces of a group of 14-day-old runted broilers contained much more starch and fat than faeces from normal birds from the same flock. Faecal trypsin was absent in runts, but present in normal birds. At 21 days of age, however, when feed conversion ratio was normal in both groups, all birds had faecal trypsin. The xylose absorption test was normal in runts, suggesting that temporary maldigestion, not malabsorption, was involved.
