Ascites associated with high altitude and cold weather had occurred among broilers in parts of Transvaal, Cape and Natal (South Africa) for 15 years. The mean arterial pressure index was 0.196 in birds kept at sea level, 0.218 in those kept at 1400-1800 m altitude, and 0.432 in those with ascites. The term 'pulmonary hypertension syndrome' was preferable to 'altitude disease'.
