Research on Salmonella-free production of broilers

During 16 months a broiler-parent flock of 230 birds was reared and kept free from Salmonella by hygienic practices. From this parent stock three flocks totalling 1520 chicks were reared for 40 days on feed free from Salmonella and slaughtered in a commercial abattoir where they were examined for Salmonella contamination. The feed was supplemented with 2.5 to 3.5% propionic acid. The influence on the bacterial counts in the feed before and after addition of propionic acid was studied. Although production of these broilers was not completely free from Salmonella, possibilities and methods for greatly reducing Salmonella contamination in broiler production were apparent.
