All of 30 men and women, 48 to 77 years old, in hospital with myocardial ischaemia or coronary atherosclerosis were above ideal bodyweight or obese before onset of symptoms. Daily energy intake in all patients and especially women exceeded, and in 66% was 40 to 50% above, requirements. Most (90%) men drank alcohol and in 70% it made up 5 to 20% of the daily energy intake. Of the 40% of women who drank, alcohol was 4 to 12% of total energy intake. Fat intake was 35 to 50% of the daily energy intake in 55% of the patients. Intake of saturated fats was high.
