2 wk before delivery, one group of 75 pregnant women were given advice on increased dietary energy requirements during lactation; a 2nd group of 99 pregnant women were not given any advice. 3 months after delivery, significantly fewer of the women in the advised group had weaned their babies due to insufficient milk. The age of weaning due to insufficient milk was later (8.64 plus or minus 0.77 wk) in the advised group than in the non-advised control group (5.76 plus or minus 0.41 wk). 74% of women who successfully breast fed their infants, vs. 45% of those who had changed to artificial feeding, reported an increased appetite during lactation.
