87 patients (90 eyes) with retinoblastoma were divided into 4 pathologic types (I, II, III and IV) according to the criteria proposed by us. Each type is further grouped into three subtypes (N, C, R.sbd.nerve, choroid, rosette). The degree of extensiveness of the lesion is expressed by No. 0 to 4. The distribution of these 90 eyes was, type I, 11 cases( 12.2%); type II, 32 (35.6%) and type III 47, (52.2%). This method of designating these 90 eyes with retinoblastoma proves that there is a discrepancy between the clinical staging and the practical extent of the lesion. It shows that retinoblastoma in the early clinical stage can already have extension beyond the eye and/or involvement of the optic nerve. In type III, fewer tumor cells are arranged into rosette-like structures. The number of rosette formation, clinical course and the prognosis are related to the pathologic type. Longer clinical course wihch goes with fewer rosette formation signifies a more extensive lesion. This may explain the importance of early detection and early surgical treatment.
