Of a group of 18 heifers on pasture, 12 developed diarrhoea and loss of balance, and a garlic-like smell of the breath was noted. Some deaths had occurred and 5 heifers were available for PM examination. Macroscopic lesions and results of histological examinations are described. While these suggested some intoxication there was much variation, and a differential diagnosis could only be confirmed by the (qualitative) finding of arsenic in the livers of 2 animals and the detection of arsenic in a powder found in a barn to which these animals had had access.
