Mexican adolescents and sexually transmitted diseases. a privacy problem

This letter presents the negative consequence of inadequate privacy protection in Mexico (i.e., presence of family members during clinical history) in disclosing sexual activity in 53 adolescent female patients (aged 10-18 years) clinically diagnosed with vulvovaginitis secondary to sexually transmitted disease between January 1995 and December 1999. Of these patients, 98.1% denied sexual activity. It is suggested that this problem will result in extensive and expensive evaluations in order to establish an STD diagnosis.
