A study was conducted to investigate the anti-human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) activity of Jinyebaidu granule (JYBDG), a preparation used in traditional Chinese medicine containing 4 herbs (Jinyinhua, Yuxingcao, Daqingye and Pugongying). 152 non-pregnant women of childbearing age and 218 women who were infected with HCMV were recruited [China; date not given]. Each group was subdivided into a therapeutic group and a control group. The HCMV inhibiting rate in the therapeutic group were 79.49% in non-pregnant women and 80.91% in pregnant women. The fetuses' intrauterine infection rate was 19.12% (13/68) in the therapeutic group, which was apparently lower tan in the control group. ( chi 2=9.625, P=0.002). Results suggest that JYBDG is a safe inhibitory drug that can be used for the treatment of HCMV infection and may prove especially valuable during pregnancy.
