Effects of acebutolol on the normal and ischemic heart

Normal anesthetized dogs and experimental myocardial infarction dogs were used for this study. Acebutolol was injected i.v. with doses of 0.3 and 3 mg/kg. Effects of acebutolol on the normal and ischemic heart were studied concerning the hemodynamics and myocardial blood flow determined by H2 clearance method. In the normal and ischemic heart, acebutolol did not decrease after-load and pre-load, and decreased the myocardial O2 demand by slowing heart rate and myocardial suppression. Acebutolol tended to decrease the myocardial blood flow in the normal heart and in every area of the ischemic heart, but the decrease was not significant. Effects of acebutolol on the ischemic myocardium would seem to maintain the myocardial O2 demand and supply balance.
