Changes in P50 values during anesthesia

On 65 patients serial estimations of P50 and epidural analgesia were combined with inhalation of N2O. Epidural analgesia alone was also performed. Corrected P50 values were elevated significantly during induction period with thiamylal and succinylcholine chloride (SCC). Higher values of P50 were sustained during N2O halothane and NLA. The values declined during NLA, enflurane anesthesia and epidural analgesia combined with N2O; the values of 2-3 DPG, ATP and ADP did not show any remarkable changes during anesthesia. Only during NLA anesthesia were values of AMP increased significantly and well-correlated with the P50 values. These values did not change during epidural analgesia without supplemental general anesthesia. Induction of general anesthesia with thiobarbiturates and SCC may increase P50 values without any associated changes of enzyme or 2-3 DPG. Changes of P50 which were observed during NLA combined with N2O may be related to changes of AMP values.
