Steenbock 2965 diet was regarded as a standard rachitogenic diet, and was used in the procedure for line test to assess antirachitic activity in sample material and to define the IU of vitamin D (v.D). However, this is a diet deficient in I. Weanling Wistar rats (SPF) were maintained on Steenbock 2965 and injected s.c. with KI, thyroid hormone (T3) and v.D, respectively. T3 was the most effective in restoring rachitic changes, which would be induced by this rachitogenic diet, as revealed by both histological and biochemical examinations; KI injection is also effective. Steenbock 2965 diet induces rickets not only by way of v.D deficiency brought about by this diet but also by secondary hypothyroidism induced by I deficiency. The effects of hypothyroidism on bone and mineral metabolism were also discussed.
