Experiments were carried out on 19 rabbits of both sexes, divided into 3 groups. After rapid i.v injection of doxorubicin (DXR) (1,3 or 6 mg/kg body wt) the mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate and cardiac output were determined. The cardiac index, stroke index and total peripheral resistance were calculated. A single i.v. dose of DXR (1 mg/kg) did not induce significant changes in cardiac index, stroke index and heart rate. The effect of higher doses of this agent (3 and 6 mg/kg) upon cardiac index and stroke index was different; 6 mg/kg significantly increased the stroke index during the first 15 min after injection. The decrease of mean arterial blood pressure and total peripheral resistance was observed after each dose used. The mechanisms of cardiovascular response to DXR are discussed.
